What Are the Side Effects of Sermorelin?

Home » Knowledge Center » Hormone Therapy » What Are the Side Effects of Sermorelin?

Mayo Clinic reports that most people experience only slight discomfort at the injection site following a sermorelin injection. If you are wondering what are the side effects of sermorelin, it’s important to know that other side effects are rare. Sermorelin is a bio-identical chemical found naturally in the human body that stimulates the pituitary gland to produce and release human growth hormone. Because sermorelin injections are close in composition to the natural chemicals produced by the body, it is usually processed with few complications.

This injection was originally designed for children with pituitary gland dysfunction or other growth restrictions. However, it is now commonly used off-label by adults with declining or low levels of human growth hormone. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reports that off-label prescriptions are “drug[s] that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved to treat a condition different than [the patient’s] condition.”

Serious Side Effects of Sermorelin Are Rare

The only relatively common side effect of sermorelin injections is pain, redness, and/or swelling at the injection site. A study published in BioDrugs asserts that sermorelin is administered as a subcutaneous injection (into the fatty tissue just beneath the skin, as described by a document published by the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center) with a tiny needle.

Rarely, sermorelin therapy may trigger a more serious reaction that requires immediate medical attention. Mayo Clinic reports that this could include itching and trouble swallowing.

A doctor may also describe additional side effects of Sermorelin that are possible based on a person’s individualized care plan. Some of these effects may pass quickly as their body adjusts to the therapy. There may be ways to reduce a person’s risk or reduce the severity of some side effects, including:

  • Dizziness
  • Flushing
  • Headache or migraine
  • Fatigue or extreme sleepiness
  • Feeling restless

If these side effects are severe or continue beyond the initial treatment period, a person may want to discuss them with their doctor.

Sermorelin Therapy May Not Work for Everyone

In some cases, sermorelin therapy is not a good choice because of factors outside of the possible list of side effects. For example, some conditions, such as having an underactive thyroid, can affect the way sermorelin works in the body. This would make the injection less effective and not bring about the desired results.

The wide range of effects sermorelin can have on the hormones in the body may also pose a risk to a person. While most people can undergo sermorelin therapy safely, each patient will need to undergo a medical exam, blood work, and supply a full health history before a doctor prescribes this medication. A doctor will determine whether or not sermorelin is right for each patient.

Sermorelin is Prescribed in Conjunction With Other Hormones

The results of a person’s lab panel will give the doctor an idea of what hormones the body needs for someone to unlock their full potential. Sermorelin is rarely prescribed on its own. Instead, it is used as a part of a more comprehensive hormone replacement therapy plan. HealthGAINS members who participate in one of these plans that include sermorelin therapy claim to experience a wide range of positive improvements in their overall wellness, including:

  • Increased energy, stamina, and endurance
  • Improved sleep with reduced disruptions at night
  • Stronger immune system
  • Improved cardiovascular fitness
  • Increase in sex drive and sexual potency
  • Improved cognitive function including memory
  • Improved focus and concentration
  • Loss of excess body fat and increased muscle mass
  • Better bone strength and improved density
  • Improvements in skin texture and elasticity

Sermorelin and other therapies used to regain and maintain previous levels of human growth hormone are not wonder drugs, but they may feel that way based on some members’ claims. Improved vitality, high energy levels, and a drive to achieve peak performance are all commonly reported with this type of therapy.

HealthGAINS Will Address a Person’s Unique Medical Needs

HealthGAINS uses only bio-identical, science-based, medically proven therapies to help clients restore their hormone levels and live life to the fullest. Because many of the therapies utilized are available by prescription only, and because each patient should get the most effective treatment possible, HealthGAINS requires every member to undergo blood testing.

A lab panel will determine if a decline in hormone levels or a low hormone level is causing a person’s symptoms, which will allow a doctor to determine which hormone replacement therapy is right for them.

HealthGAINS Carefully Monitors Hormone Replacement Therapy Plans

A doctor will not prescribe sermorelin unless they identify a deficiency in a person’s hormone levels and believe this is the best treatment based on their individual situation. All of the therapies and plans a doctor prescribes are customized to fit each patient’s specific needs and condition. HealthGAINS will continue to monitor patients throughout their therapy to make adjustments as needed and ensure the plan is working for them.
