What is Estrogen?
Estrogen is a naturally occurring substance in the human body, and both healthy men and women regularly produce it. Estrogen plays an important role in the male reproductive system and in men is produced by the testes, fat cells and adrenal glands.

What is Estradiol?
The main type of estrogen is called “estradiol,” and when it is needed, the male body converts testosterone into estradiol. It does this when it regulates a man’s sex drive, helps him achieve an erection, assists the body in producing sperm and maintains the functioning of the testes.
Estrogen also does some other very important things in both female and male bodies. For example, it helps control the body’s cholesterol levels and maintains a healthy heart and bone mass.
What is a Healthy Level of Estrogen for Men?
The Endocrine Society states that a healthy level of estradiol for a man is between 10 and 40 pg/mL. Estrone is another type of estrogen, and males need between 10 and 50 pg/mL.

What to do when there is a Hormone Imbalance
Testosterone is the main sex hormone that regulates a man’s sexual functioning, but estrogen also plays a significant role. If estrogen and testosterone are out of balance, the estrogen can’t help control your sex drive or maintain the production of sperm. It also cannot maintain your ability to have an erection.
As a man grows older, his testosterone levels naturally begin to fall. At the same time, his levels of estrogen begin to increase, but this is normal and nothing to be concerned about. The only time you might begin to be concerned is when your estrogen levels begin to be abnormally high and the symptoms listed below start to appear. High levels of estrogen in men also can lead to diabetes and some forms of cancer.
When it’s Time to See a Doctor
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, it is time to see a medical professional. Your physician will need to take a blood sample or a urine sample to determine your estrogen level. If low levels of estrogen are causing your symptoms, your physician will develop a treatment plan that may include hormone replacement therapy.
The symptoms listed above are the reason why men get estrogen replacement therapy. This therapy provides benefits that relieve these symptoms and may be administered in several ways. For example, your physician may give you an injection, a patch, or a gel that will relieve your symptoms.
