Progesterone For Women

Dr. Alvaro J. Ocampo Posted on: February 15, 2021

Hormone replacement therapy is often used to alleviate the symptoms of various conditions. A common use is for menopausal women to treat the symptoms that disrupt daily living or women who have trouble with fertility. Correcting hormonal imbalances helps the body function at its optimal state and promotes longevity.

Feeling like you need relief from symptoms that don’t seem to go away? Do you find yourself improving your daily habits but keep running into a roadblock in your well-being? You could be suffering from a hormonal imbalance brought on by various reasons including the normal aging process, menopause, medical conditions, medications, and other cases.

When a hormone deficiency is not addressed in a timely manner, it can leave the body vulnerable to a host of diseases and symptoms. If you haven’t felt like yourself lately, perhaps it is time to see if a hormonal imbalance is what has you off track.

What is Progesterone

This essential hormone is a building block your body uses to make other hormones such as cortisol, testosterone, estrogen, and DHEA. It also acts as a protective component for the brain and plays a key role in various functions of the body.

Whatever the reason may be why your hormones are out of balance, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is a viable solution to deal with the dysfunction of the endocrine system.

What is the Role of Progesterone For Women?

What does progesterone do? In a woman’s body, this hormone controls fertility and menstruation. It is a steroid hormone that belongs to the class called progestogens. One function is to prepare the endometrium after ovulation for a possible pregnancy. The lining of the uterus becomes thick, ready to host a fertilized egg.

In addition, this hormone impedes muscle contractions in the uterus to prevent the body from rejecting a fertilized egg. When the body produces a high level of this hormone it will not ovulate. If pregnancy doesn’t happen, the hormone is lowered and menstruation is triggered. However, if pregnancy does occur, the hormone continues at high levels to promote the formation of blood vessels that will feed the fetus as it grows.

As pregnancy continues, so grows the high levels of this hormone, which prevents the release of more eggs and also contributes to the production of breast milk.

Low Progesterone

Women who experience low levels of this hormone have abnormal periods or may have a hard time conceiving. They also have difficulty carrying out a full pregnancy and often face miscarriages or premature births. This important hormone is essential for supporting a healthy pregnancy.

Possible symptoms of low progesterone levels are:

  • Irregular or missed menstruation
  • Abdominal pain or spotting while pregnant
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Miscarriages
  • High levels of estrogen

Low progesterone symptoms may present themselves as mild to severe. When this hormone is depleted, it causes high levels of estrogen characterized by a lowered sex drive, weight gain, and gallbladder dysfunction. Both estrogen and progesterone need to be balanced for a woman to be healthy.

When Should I Be Concerned About My Progesterone Levels?

Depletion of this hormone can cause problems at any stage of a woman’s life, but it is especially important during childbearing years and during menopause.

Unfortunately, abnormal levels of these hormones has been linked to problems with fertility in women. It is also the reason why so many women who face menopause have debilitating symptoms that interfere with their well-being.

There are modern medical solutions that address this problem to help women overcome any difficulties. If you suspect having a hormonal imbalance, it must be addressed as soon as possible to give your body the best chance it has at returning normality to its function.

Testing and Diagnosis

A helpful tool utilized by health professionals is a progesterone test (PGSN). It can provide a reading indicating low levels of this hormone. This test is a simple blood screening that requires no preparation ahead of time by the patient.

The PGSN test is also used to monitor hormone therapy or the status of a pregnancy that is considered to be at high-risk. Once the physician assesses your hormonal status, a hormone replacement plan may be suggested as part of treatment.

Benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy

An effective way to treatment for a hormonal imbalance is through bioidentical hormone replacement, which uses plant-based hormones that are bioidentical to those made in the human body.

Customized therapy is designed according to the individual’s needs. They help the body regain its hormonal balance while alleviating the symptoms that manifest. Women see the following improvements during and after therapy:

  • Menstrual cycle gets back to normal
  • PMS symptoms are less intense
  • Mood stabilizes
  • Usual headaches go away
  • Weight becomes normal again
  • Hot flashes go away
  • Fertility improves

It is possible for your physician to prescribe a combination of hormones that your body needs for optimal balance. Although not all women have them, there are possible side effects of progesterone replacement therapy such as:

  • Vomit
  • Breast tenderness or pain
  • Upset stomach
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Tiredness
  • Muscle, joint, or bone pain

Receiving Medically Supervised Treatment

Diagnosis is just the first step on the road to recovery for those suffering a hormone imbalance. Once you have been diagnosed, then you can start treatment to normalize your body’s hormone levels. Like any other hormone therapy, the goal isn’t to add an abnormal amount of new hormone into the bloodstream, but rather to use the smallest amount possible in order to avoid painful or embarrassing symptoms or side effects.

To regain hormonal balance safely, you must be under the care of an experienced physician who specializes in hormone replacement therapy. Blood tests must be monitored closely during the length of your treatment and adjustments may be necessary as you progress.
