You might think that becoming forgetful is a normal part of aging. While it’s true our cognitive functions slow down to a certain extent as we get older, your memory loss and mental slowness may actually be related to your low testosterone levels.
Many research studies have established a link between testosterone levels and cognitive function. That’s why restoring your hormonal balance can help you have fewer “senior moments” and help improve your mental focus.
Hormone Imbalance Symptoms
Low testosterone or low T levels can affect your mental function.
Men with hormone imbalance frequently:
- Have low energy and are easily tired.
- Get drowsy during the day.
- Have difficulty remembering events.
- Find it hard to focus and concentrate.
- Become irritable and impatient.

Can Hormone Imbalances Cause Memory Loss?
What is the link between brain function and low testosterone?
Jeri Janowsky, professor of behavioral neuroscience and neurology at the Oregon Health and Science University, conducted a 2004 study that found marked links between low testosterone and forgetfulness.
“Testosterone-deprived men can immediately get the information, but then the brain can’t consolidate it and send it off for storage,” she wrote. “When you look at their memory, they’re perfectly normal when they’re immediately asked to recall something, but they can’t hold or save the information as well in order to recall it over a retention interval. They’re faster at forgetting.”
Lack of testosterone can slow down your brain. One study found that men with low testosterone levels have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other cognitive disorders.
As one article summarized this research, “The male brain is highly dependent on appropriate levels of testosterone for healthy function, and low testosterone may cause increased neurodegeneration and decline in brain function. Studies have validated that compared to controls, men with Alzheimer’s and dementia symptoms have lower levels of testosterone.”
Memory Loss and Aging
Everyone has memory lapses. Even young people can lose things, forget names, and miss appointments. When you’re older, it seems to strike home because you’re embarrassed to look like a doddering old man.
In fact, memory loss and lower cognitive function are not inevitable when you get older. Your brain changes its shape as you get older, and that can affect your memory and ability to focus.

How To Improve Mental Function as You Age
The Harvard Health newsletter recommends seven ways to keep your brain sharp as you get older.
These methods can help your brain work better, but they can’t reverse the memory loss caused by your low testosterone levels. The only way to restore the hormonal balance that can restore your youthful brain function is to get hormone replacement therapy with bioidentical hormones.
- Learn something new. Learning new things is a great way to work your brain’s muscles. It’s important to learn something that engages parts of the brain you don’t already use. If you’re a creative person, try to learn something scientific and analytical. Take classes, learn languages, study art or take up gardening.
- Use all your senses. When you eat food, start by engaging your senses of smell and sight before you taste it. Learn skills that involve using your hands. Open yourself to full sensory experiences.
- Believe you can do it. According to the Letter, “Myths about aging can contribute to a failing memory. Middle-aged and older learners do worse on memory tasks when they’re exposed to negative stereotypes about aging and memory, and better when the messages are positive about memory preservation into old age.”
- Keep routine information accessible. Use calendars, GPS, maps and planners to help you get things done. Make to-do lists and shopping lists. Don’t waste your brain’s energy on keeping track of these details.
- Say it out loud. When you learn something new, affix it to your memory by saying it out loud. For instance, use someone’s name as soon as you hear it. Remind yourself aloud of an important appointment. If you often talk to yourself, you’re probably already using this method.
- Don’t cram. When you’re learning something new, give yourself time to spread out your learning. Absorb it in small chunks. Rehearse your new information mentally. “Research shows that spaced rehearsal improves recall not only in healthy people but also in those with certain physically based cognitive problems.”
- Use memory tricks. Develop tricks to help you remember basic information. Rhymes, acronyms and other tricks are very useful.
Of course, there is no guarantee that these interventions will work or will be possible to stick to, long-term, which is why so many have turned to the care and support of

Benefits of Hormone Therapy for Memory Loss
If hormone loss leads to brain and memory problems, can hormone replacement restore brain function? There is ample evidence it can.
A 2016 randomized and controlled study found that “There was a modest but significant improvement in general cognitive functioning as measured by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) following testosterone treatment.”
In 2005, researchers found that testosterone supplements improved memory in men with Alzheimer’s and other types of cognitive impairment.
If testosterone can help men with Alzheimer’s, imagine what it can do for you.
In a 2000 study in the journal Neurology, healthy older men received testosterone supplementation. “The results suggest that short-term testosterone administration enhances cognitive function in healthy older men,” the researchers wrote. “However, it remains unclear whether these improvements in cognition are due to increased testosterone or estradiol levels or both.”
The researchers here are referring to the importance of hormonal balance. Hormonal balance is the basis of our safe, clinically proven treatment. If you want to feel your best mentally and physically, call us at Xxx-XXX-XXXX to get started.
What Is the Best Way To Restore Testosterone Levels?
You may have tried some of these methods to restore your hormone levels.
Lifestyle Changes
Healthy lifestyle habits can help you maintain or increase your testosterone levels. A good diet and regular exercise will keep you strong, healthy, and better able to regulate hormonal balance. Regular, restful sleep is necessary for testosterone production.
Oral Supplements
You have probably seen advertisements for oral testosterone boosters. These are mostly vitamin blends that also contain high levels of zinc, vitamin D, fenugreek, and other ingredients.
While there is evidence that these supplements can be beneficial, the concentrations in these formulas are not strong enough to reverse a drop in testosterone.
Synthetic Steroids
Some people use anabolic steroids to boost their testosterone. Steroid use can be extremely dangerous. In most cases, people use the incorrect dosage, administer it incorrectly, and don’t regulate the hormonal balance. Incorrect use of steroids can lead to serious problems, including:
- Loss of sexual function.
- Acne on the face and back.
- Hair loss.
- Irritability and anger knew as “roid rage.”
All of these methods can have some benefit for managing the symptoms of lowered overall testosterone, but they are not enough to restore your low T to its previous levels on its own. The best method for restoring your levels of testosterone, effectively reversing many of the effects caused by deficiency, is through a comprehensive testosterone replacement therapy under the supervision of a medical professional, like the experts here at HealthGAINS
