What Happens When a Man’s Testosterone Is Low?

Home » Knowledge Center » Hormone Therapy » What Happens When a Man’s Testosterone Is Low?

When a man’s testosterone is low, he can experience many unpleasant symptoms that can affect his strength, stamina, mood, appearance, and overall well-being. You do not have to give up and accept those problems as your “new normal.” Testosterone therapy can help you hold on to your vitality.

Symptoms of Low Testosterone

When a man’s testosterone levels fall, he might feel as if his best days are behind him. Some of the more common indications that a man might have low testosterone, also called low-T, include:

  • Low metabolism: His metabolism does not work as efficiently as before. As a result, he does not burn fats and carbohydrates as quickly as he used to. He gains weight, particularly around the midsection. He starts to look pudgy instead of lean. His body mass index (BMI) numbers become less healthy. The same diet and exercise routine that worked in the past to control his weight no longer does the trick.
  • Fatigue: He wakes up sluggish and drags through his day. He does not feel energetic as he did years ago. He used to feel like conquering the competition, but now he merely wants to survive the day.
  • Low libido: His interest in sex has decreased along with his ability to perform in the bedroom. Erectile dysfunction becomes more frequent.
  • Anemic: He can develop anemia, which is a low red blood cell count.
  • Arterial disease: He can have an increased risk of coronary artery disease.
  • Decreased muscle mass: His muscle mass decreases, which accentuates the appearance of increased body fat. He looks round rather than angular. Going to the gym does not improve the amount of muscle he has or his strength. He works out longer but gets disappointing results. Because of his decreased energy, it becomes more difficult to complete his exercise routine.
  • Osteoporosis: His bones can become thin and brittle. These symptoms can result in a diagnosis of osteoporosis, which leads to a higher risk of bone fractures with osteoporosis. When an older person breaks a bone, it can take longer to heal and get his strength back. Fractures can lead to a loss of mobility and independence.
  • Mood change: It should not be surprising that, with all of these changes, his overall mood deteriorates. He starts to feel sad, depressed, irritable, or angry. His self-esteem plummets, along with his motivation and confidence.
  • Cognition: It can be an ever-increasing challenge to maintain concentration, memory, and clear thinking. He might begin to feel as if his best days are behind him.

Other medical conditions can cause these signs, so you do not want to procrastinate if you experience some of these symptoms. You might want to get diagnostic lab tests done to measure your hormone levels. At HealthGAINS, we perform extensive laboratory testing on our patients to determine when a man’s testosterone is low, and by how much, as part of designing a tailored treatment plan.

Causes of a Man’s Low Testosterone

A male’s body starts producing testosterone even before birth. His testosterone levels increase until he is in his late teens. When a man is about 20 years old, his testosterone production starts to decrease gradually. Every year from that point, his body produces about 1% or 2% less testosterone than the year before.

By the time a man is around 30, he might start to notice that he does not have the energy he did 10 years before. Late nights hurt more the next day. Shooting hoops with the neighborhood teenagers might make him feel slow. When he hits 40 or 50, his levels are low enough to impact his daily life. When the symptoms of low testosterone become too significant to brush off as an occasional annoyance, he is likely in male menopause, also called andropause.

Medical treatments like chemotherapy or radiation to the area can also cause a man’s testosterone to be low. Also, some genetic conditions can cause a man to produce low amounts of testosterone.
