Can PRP Regrow Hair?

Home » Knowledge Center » Wellness » Can PRP Regrow Hair?

There is evidence that Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) can regrow hair for some people with certain types of hair loss. According to a study reported in the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery, “PRP injection is a simple, cost-effective, and feasible treatment option for androgenic alopecia, with high overall patient satisfaction.”

If you suffer from hair loss, PRP may be an answer. It is a good idea for you, as a prospective patient, to start by seeing a doctor for a general evaluation of your health to determine whether there are nutritional deficiencies or health reasons underlying the loss.

If your hair loss is due to androgenetic alopecia (which is a hereditary hair thinning that affects both men and women) or from traction alopecia (which is hair thinning caused by too-tight hairstyles that pull the hair out), PRP therapy may be right for you. This is especially true if you have only recently begun to lose your hair and have the type of hair thinning that typically occurs along the top of the head.

PRP as a Scientific Practice

PRP is an injectable substance made from a patient’s own blood. Since it is not a foreign substance, it is not likely to cause an allergic reaction or expose the patient to a communicable disease. By injecting the PRP into the scalp, healing and growth of hair are stimulated and accelerated. Once in the scalp, PRP promotes new cellular growth and stimulates the hair follicles to grow and to thicken existing hairs.

PRP is produced by having some of a patient’s own blood drawn in a medical professional’s office. According to Healthline, this blood is put into a machine called a centrifuge, which spins the sample, causing the various components of the blood to separate into three layers:

  • platelet-poor plasma
  • platelet-rich plasma
  • red blood cells

The platelets are extracted from the platelet-rich plasma and used for injections into the scalp at the hair-follicle level. In addition to being used for hair growth, PRP has been used to stimulate healing in injured tendons, muscles, and ligaments.

Procedures for PRP Hair Regrowth

There is no standardized procedure for PRP, and individual doctors give treatments at different schedules. A patient may start with three monthly treatments to see how their hair is responding, and then continue with booster treatments at intervals to keep hair follicles stimulated and growing.

Injections are given with a needle over the area of thinning hair. For most people, there is minimal or no pain. Treatments — including blood draw and injections — usually take less than 90 minutes. Price per treatment varies according to doctor and location.

In one study published by the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery, eleven patients suffering from hair loss due to androgenic alopecia were given 2-3 cc of PRP injected in the scalp every two weeks, for a total of four treatments. Results showed a significant reduction in hair loss between the first and fourth injection, with hair count increasing from an average of 71 hair follicular units to 93 hair follicular units per square centimeter of scalp.

How I Can Determine Whether PRP is Right For Me

If you suffer from hair loss and want to find out if PRP or any other topical, oral, or surgical hair loss treatment will work for you, you should first evaluate your options with a doctor to rule out underlying medical conditions and determine what type of hair loss you have. If the hair loss is caused by androgenetic or traction alopecia, you have early-onset hair loss, and you want to prevent future hair loss, PRP can help by restoring and strengthening active follicles.
