Is Sermorelin FDA Approved?

Home » Knowledge Center » Sermorelin Therapy » Is Sermorelin FDA Approved?

Sermorelin acetate was approved by the Food and Drug Administration or FDA for the treatment of children, but physicians also prescribe it to treat growth hormone deficiency in adults.

Growth Hormone Deficiency

Even though you are no longer growing, your body still needs growth hormone. This hormone that is so important is a protein that the pituitary gland produces. It enters the bloodstream and regulates the health of your muscles, your bone density, the way in which your body collects fat and the lipoproteins in your cholesterol.

Cholesterol

When you have a growth hormone deficiency, your body tends to have more of the bad cholesterol than the good cholesterol.

Low-Density Lipoproteins: Low-density lipoproteins are commonly known as the “LDL” lipoproteins. We know this lipoprotein to be the “bad” cholesterol that can lead to a buildup of cholesterol in your arteries.

High-Density Lipoproteins: High-density lipoproteins are the “good” cholesterol because they grab cholesterol from parts of your body and take it back to the liver. The liver can then eliminate this excess cholesterol.

Triglycerides

Triglycerides are fats that your body stores as future sources of energy, but a growth hormone deficiency leads to an increase of these substances. An increased level of triglycerides is dangerous because it causes several heart diseases.

Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone

Growth hormone-releasing hormone is the hormone that stimulates the pituitary gland to produce and then release growth hormones into the bloodstream. It is a hormone that is produced within the hypothalamus. In addition to stimulating the release of growth hormones, this hormone also plays a role in memory, the amount of food that is eaten and sleep.

After growth hormone is released, it goes to most of the cells in the body where it controls and metabolizes growth. Then, growth hormone stimulates the production of another growth factor known as “insulin-like growth factor” that helps control growth and metabolism.

Sermorelin is a synthetic version of the growth hormone-releasing hormone that the body makes.

Children and Adults with Growth Hormone Deficiency

Children with growth hormone deficiency fail to grow at a normal pace, and they remain relatively small.

In adults with growth hormone deficiency, the hypothalamus doesn’t produce and release as much growth hormone. This results in decreasing bone and muscle mass and an increase in body fat. The person begins to feel tired, and his or her quality of life tends to be lower.

Sermorelin acetate has been used to treat this condition, and it has caused the pituitary gland to produce and secrete growth hormone.

The Cause of Human Growth Hormone Deficiency

The most common cause of human growth hormone deficiency is damage to the hypothalamus or the pituitary gland. The damage may have been caused by a tumor or the surgery or radiation therapy that was performed to treat the tumor. Also, your pituitary gland may not have received a sufficient amount of blood to function properly. Sometimes, there are injuries to the pituitary gland, and this causes growth hormone deficiency.

The Age-Related Cause

Like with many other things, our levels of human growth hormone decrease as we age. By the time you were 40, you had less than half the amount of human growth hormones that you had when you were in your 20s. Treatment with Sermorelin can help you if your human growth hormone levels are not low for other reasons.

Symptoms of Human Growth Hormone Deficiency

If you have been diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency, you may be experiencing the following symptoms:

  • Differences in the composition of your blood
  • A reduction in bone density and an increased number of fractures
  • Less strength and energy
  • Less lean muscle mass
  • The inability to tolerate hot and cold
  • Tiredness
  • A lower libido
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Excess body weight especially in the midsection

Treatment of Growth Hormone Deficiency

Sermorelin acetate has been approved for age-related growth hormone deficiency. The recommended Sermorelin dosage is 0.2 to 0.3 mcg. of the synthetic hormone that is to be injected before you go to bed every night.

Because you will be applying these injections before you go to sleep, your body will have the opportunity to increase its production of human growth hormone while you sleep. Although this hormone can be released throughout the day in small numbers, the majority of it will be released while you are in REM sleep.
