According to recent data, a little over half of those over the age of 60 who are healthy enough for sex actually have intercourse at least twice a month. There are many factors that can contribute to a person’s libido as they get older but to get a good sense of what could be contributing to their struggles.
A little over half of the individuals, who are healthy enough for sex, say that they have intercourse at least two times per month while nearly a quarter have it at least once a week. These numbers equate to about 20 percent of 60-year-olds making love less than twice per month.
While there are unique health considerations for aging adults, there are also other lifestyle elements that may affect libido in both women and men.

A study of sexuality and health among older Americans published in The New England Journal of Americans is quite revealing when it comes to the frequency and satisfaction older adults experience over the age of 60.
The study concluded that:
- Individuals with very good health or better are more sexually active than those who are not.
- Older women are less likely to have a sexual partner than compared to men of the same age.
- 54% of sexually active people have sex at least two or three times a month.
- 23% of older people have sex at least once a week.
- 35% of women at this age state that sexual intercourse is not important at all compared to 13% of men.
- 50% of older adults say that they have at least one bothersome, sexual issue.
- 37% of older men believe that maintaining an erection is the biggest cause of their sexual problems.
- 38% of males and 22% of females never discuss their sexual health with their doctors.
While there is no simple cause to cite for a flagging libido in adults over the age of 60, there are treatments and therapies available to help improve upon this important part of their adult lives.

There are several causes that can lead to people not having the sexual satisfaction that they desire and need. According to the National Institute on Aging, everything from lifestyle to age to undiagnosed medical conditions can cause changes to the body and affect the sex lives of older adults.
Some of these factors include:
- The natural aging process of sex organs and hormones
- Health conditions related to blood pressure, pain, and obesity
- Certain medications that make achieving orgasm a challenge
Even for otherwise healthy adults, a flagging libido can be a huge problem. Many of the mild symptoms can be addressed with diet or lifestyle changes, but for many aging adults, hormone therapy offers a much more effective and efficient means of treatment.
